The cause of death for filmmaker Jeff Baena, who was married to actress Aubrey Plaza, has been confirmed as suicide. He was 47 years old at the time of his passing.
Baena died on Friday at his home in California, as reported by the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s records reviewed by USA TODAY. He was known for directing films such as Life After Beth, The Little Hours, and Horse Girl, and co-wrote David O. Russell’s I Heart Huckabees. His most recent work, Spin Me Round, released in 2022, starred Plaza alongside Alison Brie.
Baena and Plaza were married in 2020 after a decade of dating, having initially met over a game of Balderdash. Plaza shared during an appearance on Ellen DeGeneres’ show in 2021 that they had a spontaneous “one-hour marriage” ceremony during the COVID-19 lockdown to commemorate their tenth anniversary.
Since the news of his passing, tributes have been pouring in for Baena and condolences for Plaza. During the Golden Globes, director Brady Corbet mentioned the couple while accepting the award for Best Director, stating, “Tonight, my heart is with Aubrey Plaza and Jeff’s family.”
Alison Brie expressed her grief on Instagram, saying, “Rest in peace, my friend.” Molly Shannon, who worked on many of Baena’s films, shared a series of heartfelt photos with him, accompanied by a broken heart emoji. Adam Pally also paid tribute on his Instagram story, noting, “My heart breaks for my friend Aubrey and the Baena family.”
Many others, including Selma Blair, have offered supportive messages to Plaza on social media, emphasizing love, strength, and the community’s support during this painful time.
