Irish Backpacker Found Dead on Koh Tao, Known as “Death Island”
Tragedy struck on Thailand’s Koh Tao, often referred to as “Death Island,” as 21-year-old Irish backpacker Robby Kinlan was found dead in his hotel room. Kinlan, from Clare in Munster, Ireland, was discovered lying on his bed in boxer shorts by a friend on the morning of January 9. Attempts to revive him were unsuccessful.
Police reported that Robby was holding his phone, which was connected to a charging socket, at the time of his death. The device was locked when officers arrived. Authorities suspect acute heart failure as the cause of death, but an autopsy is pending in Surat Thani province on the mainland. High seas around Koh Tao have delayed the transport of his body.
Devastated Family Pays Tribute
Robby’s mother, Tracy King, shared a heartfelt tribute to her son:
“Rest in peace, my precious son Robby. He is resting in a beautiful temple in Koh Tao, Thailand, before his removal back to Ireland. I’m heartbroken and overwhelmed, but so very grateful for the kindness being shown to us at this time.”
She described Robby as a person who brought joy to every room and was always willing to help others selflessly. In Thailand, he was surrounded by friends and pursuing his passion for freediving and scuba diving.
The family has launched a fundraising campaign to repatriate Robby’s body to Ireland for burial. If repatriation is not possible, he will be cremated at a local Buddhist temple.
Discovery and Investigation
Robby was staying at the BaanTao Bungalow Resort, approximately two miles from Sairee Beach, the site of the infamous 2014 murders of British tourists Hannah Witheridge and David Miller.
Lieutenant Colonel Theeraphat Sanjai stated:
“The death seems to be acute heart failure. His friend, who had known him for five to six years, found the body after knocking on his door and receiving no response. Staff entered the room by climbing in, as it was locked from the inside.”
Police found no signs of assault, break-in, or alcohol in the room. A musty odor was present, but no clear evidence pointed to foul play. Officers confirmed that the Irish Embassy in Bangkok has been informed, and they are awaiting further communication from Robby’s family.
Koh Tao’s Troubled Reputation
Koh Tao is a popular destination for its stunning marine life and world-class diving, attracting tourists from around the globe. However, it has also gained a reputation for unexplained deaths and violent incidents, earning it the nickname “Death Island.”
Authorities have assured that a thorough investigation will be conducted to determine the exact cause of Robby’s death. Meanwhile, his family and friends mourn the loss of a young man who was described as “living the dream” while exploring the beauty of Thailand.
