Inquest Begins Into 2018 Helicopter Crash Killing Leicester City Owner

An inquest into the helicopter crash that claimed the life of Leicester City Football Club owner Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha opened on Monday. The Thai billionaire and four others died when his personal helicopter crashed shortly after taking off from the King Power Stadium following a match in October 2018.

Catherine Mason, the coroner presiding over the hearing, informed the jury that the purpose of the inquest under English law is to establish the facts surrounding the deaths, rather than to assign guilt or innocence.

“An inquest hears evidence so the jury can make findings of fact and come to a conclusion about the deaths,” Mason stated at Leicester City Hall. “Nobody is on trial here. An inquest does not decide matters of criminal or civil liability.” She indicated that the hearing is expected to last between two and three weeks.

During the proceedings, a tribute read by the family’s lawyer described Srivaddhanaprabha as “a good man with a good heart.” The statement also acknowledged his significant role in revitalizing Leicester City and financing their remarkable Premier League title victory in 2016, when the club was a 5,000-to-1 outsider at the season’s start.

“Khun Vichai had a vision to put the club in the Premier League. He wanted to build the club up, not just run it,” the family said. “With his support and commitment, the team won the Premier League in 2016—in only their second year in the division. We miss him every day. The pain his death caused and continues to cause our family is immeasurable.”

In a related development, the family announced last week that they have initiated legal action against the helicopter’s manufacturers, reportedly for £2.15 billion ($2.63 billion)—which could become the largest fatal accident claim in English history.
