Hungarian Man Arrested in Chonburi for 1.5 Million Baht Theft from Nonthaburi Shopping Mall
Chonburi, Thailand – A 57-year-old Hungarian man, identified as Mr. Altal, was arrested in Chonburi on March 8 for allegedly stealing 1.5 million baht from a vehicle parked at a shopping mall in Nonthaburi according to police reports.
The Incident
A 38-year-old Thai victim from Lampang withdrew 1.5 million baht from a bank and left it on the back seat of his sedan while running errands inside the mall. Upon returning, he discovered that his car window had been smashed and the cash was missing.
Investigation and Arrest
Authorities reviewed CCTV footage and identified a foreign man fleeing on an unregistered motorcycle. The suspect later parked the bike at a repair shop in Bangkok’s Sai Mai district, left for two hours, and returned with a new license plate.
Further investigation led police to Altal’s residence near the repair shop, where he lived with his 37-year-old Thai wife. Officers obtained an arrest warrant from Nonthaburi Provincial Court for “theft by damaging a barrier protecting property.”
On March 8, around 12:25 p.m., police located Altal relaxing by a swimming pool in Chonburi and arrested him.
Seized Evidence
During the arrest, police confiscated:
- A motorcycle used in the crime
- 187,850 baht in cash
- A mobile phone
Although Altal has denied the charges, police are continuing their investigation and gathering additional evidence before proceeding with legal action.
