Hospital Director Arrested Amid Violence in Gaza

Israeli forces have arrested the director of a hospital along with other staff in a raid on the last operating health facility in northern Gaza, according to health officials. The raid on Kamal Adwan Hospital has drawn widespread condemnation as disturbing accounts of patient treatment emerge.

The police action resulted in the evacuation of remaining patients—some critically ill—to the Indonesian Hospital in Beit Lahiya, as confirmed by the World Health Organization. The hospital has faced continuous attacks, contributing to an already dire humanitarian situation in the region.

Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, the hospital director, remains unaccounted for following his arrest, leading to public concern for his safety. “We do not know the fate of Dr. Hussam. He was actually threatened by the army as soon as they arrived at the hospital,” said nurse Rawiya Al Batsh in a statement to CNN.

In a message released by Abu Safiya’s family, they urged for public awareness and media attention to expedite his release. Reports indicate that during the raid, patients and staff were ordered outside and separated by gender, with both men and women allegedly instructed to strip. Some nurses reported extreme treatment, including physical abuse against those who refused to comply.

The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) stated that they conducted operations in the vicinity of the hospital, alleging the facility was being used as a base for Hamas activities. However, the lack of protective measures for civilian lives has raised alarms for both local and international observers.

President Alexander Stubb of Finland condemned the hospital raid, while various officials called for investigations into the treatment and rights of healthcare workers in conflict zones. Despite the gravity of the situation, the IDF has not provided clear answers regarding the whereabouts of patients or the alleged strip search incidents involving their armed personnel.

The hospital, a vital resource for the region, has struggled under increased pressure as attacks on civilian infrastructure continue. As a response to the turmoil, the international community, including human rights organizations, urges for the protection of medical staff and facilities in compliance with international humanitarian law.

Dr. Zaher Sahloul, president of MedGlobal, a nonprofit organization working in Gaza, stressed the urgent need for the release of Dr. Abu Safiya, stating, “His arrest is not only unjust but a violation of international humanitarian law.”

With ongoing investigations and reports of violence, the plight of healthcare and humanitarian aid in Gaza remains at a critical juncture, illustrating the human cost of the ongoing conflict.
