The German government has condemned a series of violent incidents that occurred on New Year’s Eve, resulting in injuries to police officers and firefighters, primarily from fireworks.
Traditionally, revelers across the nation celebrate the arrival of the new year by setting off fireworks in public spaces. However, this year’s festivities were overshadowed by aggressive behaviors directed at emergency personnel.
In Berlin alone, 30 police officers and one firefighter were injured during confrontations that escalated into attacks, leading to approximately 400 arrests. Authorities deployed hundreds of officers to the capital in an effort to prevent further violence.
Additionally, German news agency dpa reported that five people lost their lives and hundreds were injured from accidental fireworks injuries during the celebrations.
Interior Minister Nancy Faeser expressed her support for the strong police presence, stating, “Strong deployment from federal and state police forces and an early and consistent crackdown are necessary measures against violence and chaos.” She emphasized that the numerous arrests in Berlin highlighted the urgent need for enforcement.
Faeser wished for a quick recovery for the injured officers and assured that all responsible individuals would be “prosecuted and punished with the utmost severity.”
