Thong Lor police have arrested nine Filipino suspects linked to a series of pickpocketing incidents targeting tourists in Bangkok. The arrests followed a report from a South Korean tourist who had his wallet stolen on Sukhumvit Soi 33 on October 16.
According to the police, the suspects surrounded the victim, distracting him before snatching his wallet and quickly dispersing. CCTV footage aided the investigation, allowing officers to identify and apprehend the group at a hotel in the Phaya Thai area. Initially, seven suspects were captured, while two others were arrested at Suvarnabhumi Airport as they attempted to flee to the Philippines.
The names of the suspects have not been released. Reports indicate that they confessed to traveling from the Philippines with the intent of targeting tourist hotspots. After committing various thefts, they would divide the proceeds and send a portion back to associates in the Philippines. Thong Lor police have charged them with nighttime theft, and legal proceedings are now underway.
