Thai dentists dodges debt of 36 Million Baht

A female Thai dentist who moved to the US to study and gain her dental degree is on the run after failing to pay debts of 36 million Baht.

Notorious debt dodging Dolrudee Jumlongras will have her Thai dental license revoked over the non-payment of THB36 million (USD1.08 million) in debts that she skipped out on after going to the U.S. to study at Harvard University over 20 years ago.

The Thai Dental Council announced today that they will yank her dental licence due to her breaking the contracts of three Thai education loans she received and never repaid, despite her promises last year to sell of her assets in the U.S. and repay the debt.

They said that she is guilty of misconduct and fraud. They noted that she has tarnished the reputation of the dental profession and that she had broken the dental code of ethics and that annulling her license was a fitting punishment.

Dolrudee, a Thai-born, one-time instructor at Harvard School of Dental Medicine received an education loan in 1993 from four professors at her undergraduate alma mater, Mahidol University, to study at the prestigious U.S. university.

They first guaranteed an THB8 million (USD241,400) loan, according to one of the guarantors, Dr. Padej Poonwithayakij.

He says Dolrudee was expected to eventually pay off the loan by returning to Thailand and working at Mahidol following her graduate studies.

Instead of returning and paying back her loans, Padej claims Dolrudee spent more than two decades in the U.S. completing masters and doctoral degrees at Harvard, during which time she has married an American and resigned her post at Mahidol University. Padej further claims that she has broken the scholarship’s contract and left her four guarantors on the hook for her debt, which has grown to THB36 million (USD1.08 million) including interest and her further studies.

In 2006, The Administrative Court demanded Dolrudee pay her debt to Mahidol and her guarantors, but she never made a single payment.

Padet Poolwithayakit, a dentist and another of the guarantors, was pleased at the decision and wants the council to create an English translation and send it to interested parties in the U.S., including the American council and the authorities in Massachusetts, where Dolrudee’s private practice is.
