Mum blew grandma’s £22,000 savings

Mum who blew grandma’s £22,000 savings on hot tub, sex toy and iPad mini spared jail. Nicole Speirs, 26, was branded “obnoxious” by a judge for defrauding her 78-year-old grandma Pearl Williams

A callous mum who blew her grandma’s £22,000 life savings on luxury goods including a sex toy has been spared jail. Nicole Speirs, 27, used Pearl Williams’s bank details and splashed hundreds on clothes, jewelry, a hot tub and “everything she could think of”. Pearl has reportedly been left feeling “devastated” especially as the pair were close. Speirs’ invoices from the four-month Amazon internet shopping spree included a £373 hot tub, a £443 remote-controlled drone, a £200 iPad mini and £24.99 for the vibrating sex toy.

She also bought hundreds of pounds worth of clothes and jewellery during the buying binge between January 16 and May 25 last year. Speirs, from Kirkintilloch, near Glasgow, was only caught after devastated Pearl, who will soon be 79, went into the bank to withdraw cash, only to find her account had been emptied.
Speirs admitted fraud by letter earlier this month.

Sheriff Brian Cameron handed mum-of-one Spiers a community payback order with the conditions she must carry out 200 hours unpaid work within six months, and be supervised in the community for 15 months. Passing sentence on the mum-of one, who fought tears in the dock, he said: “This was a gross and obnoxious breach of trust.” Spiers has a young son with health difficulties and admitted her guilt from the outset. The sheriff added: “But for those two factors you would be going to prison today.” The court heard that of the money spent, only £9,916 was recovered. Mirror
