Mobile phone number sells for 4.5 Million Baht
Within an hour of the start of Sunday’s auction for “lucky” mobile phone numbers in Bangkok, the number 096-999-9999, which had a starting price of Bt3 million, attracted 74 bids and was finally sold for Bt4.5 million.
The auction by the Office of the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) saw a total of 95 numbers up for grabs. They were described as “beautiful numbers that are auspicious and will make you rich”.
The agency hoped to raise more than Bt80 million in this auction, the third of its kind this year, according to a statement by NBTC secretary-general Takorn Tantasith at a press conference earlier this month.
It was different to the first two auctions, which focused on selling phone numbers that featured the same digits. This auction included some in that category as well as numbers that had been certified as auspicious by numbers-based fortuneteller Kongthanatkul Setthisathaporn.
