Cruise down the Chao Phraya River on a floating park

Cruise down the Chao Phraya River on a floating park

From now until Feb. 4, you can have the unique experience of getting aboard a barge with a park on top of it that’s floating in Bangkok’s majestic Chao Phraya River — for free.

Check out the “park” as it floated toward a blazing Bangkok sunset on Friday while a fan filmed from Rama 8 Bridge above:

As part of Bangkok Design Week 2018, “Floating Park” is a temporary park installation and “chill-out experience” offering a unique perspective of Bangkok from the river, but not while racing along it for transport.

The park is a project by Bangkok landscape architect firm Shma company. They spoke about the project, expressing that the river used to be the center of life in Bangkok but, for decades, it’s been neglected.

“We have destroyed her through the urbanization and unplanned developments. The river also faced many challenges and problems from water pollution, decaying of community and cultural heritage, losing ecological value, and rising of flood and sea water.”

“It’s time for us to relook and reimagine how shall the city live with the river in the future with the more inclusive approach where nature and people are part of the process and consideration.”

“We are sending this message through our Floating Park project to raise people’s awareness and public curiosity.”

The side of the barge features graffiti by much loved Bangkok street artist Alex Face and, on Friday afternoon, the barge park will even host a concert.
