Elon Musk Denies 'Hostile Takeover' of US Government

Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and owner of X, stated that “the public voted for major government reform… and they’re going to get what they voted for” during a visit to the Oval Office with Donald Trump, as the president signed an executive order allowing Musk to implement significant reductions in the federal workforce.

As head of the newly established Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), Musk aims to introduce “common sense controls” and ensure taxpayer money is used judiciously. The executive order mandates government agencies to collaborate with DOGE, potentially leading to the elimination or combination of agencies whose functions are not legally required.

Furthermore, the order stipulates that agencies can only hire one new employee for every four that leave federal service, with exceptions for immigration, law enforcement, and public safety roles.

During the press conference, while carrying his son X Æ A-12 on his shoulders, Musk addressed accusations of orchestrating a “hostile takeover” of the government. He emphasized that the public’s call for reform is a fundamental aspect of democracy. Musk defined the bureaucracy as an “unelected, unconstitutional branch of government” that holds significant power over elected representatives.

He also discussed the importance of fiscal responsibility, stating, “Your tax dollars need to be spent wisely on things that matter to the people.” In response to questions about accountability, Musk insisted on transparency regarding DOGE’s actions and acknowledged that mistakes would occur but would be swiftly rectified.

As he spoke, he aimed to reassure the public about the integrity of his intentions and the operations of his department. “Some of the things that I say will be incorrect and should be corrected… Nobody can bat 1,000,” Musk said.

X Æ A-12, standing next to Trump, garnered some attention as the president commented on the child, praising him and noting his high intelligence.

Earlier in the day, Musk criticized judges who have suspended Trump’s executive actions, claiming, “Democracy in America is being destroyed by judicial coup.” Trump echoed these sentiments, expressing concerns over judicial authority inhibiting reform efforts.

While in the Oval Office, Trump also held discussions with Jordan’s King Abdullah, reiterating his controversial plans regarding Gaza, which the king has firmly opposed.
