Drunk policeman fired after shooting Rampage

Pol. Col. Navin Sinthurat, Superintendent of Banglamung Police Station, received reports of a man firing gunshots into the air in Soi Wat Boon Sampan (Soi Khao Noi), East Pattaya. The suspect, reportedly intoxicated and enraged, posed a continuing threat to public safety. Officers from both Banglamung and Nongprue Police Stations were dispatched to apprehend him.

The shooter was later identified as Pol. Sgt. Sunthorn, an officer from Najomtien Police Station. He fled to his home in Soi Wat Boon Sampan 5, roughly 800 meters from where the shooting occurred. When authorities arrived, they found him heavily intoxicated, shouting and causing a disturbance. Over 50 officers surrounded the house and evacuated nearby residents for safety. After about 30 minutes, the police were able to detain him, seizing a .357 handgun and three spent bullet casings.

Witnesses recounted the events leading to the shooting. Mr. Nong (alias), a 59-year-old grocery store owner, stated that Pol. Sgt. Sunthorn, visibly drunk, had demanded alcohol on credit, but when his request was denied, he left in anger. Shortly after, gunshots were heard. Ms. Noi (alias), a 56-year-old food vendor, shared that the officer had attempted to get food on credit from her but was refused due to previous payment delays. Enraged, he threatened her before storming off and firing shots into the air. Fearing for her life, she took cover under her kitchen counter.

Local residents described Pol. Sgt. Sunthorn as having a history of excessive drinking, particularly of local white liquor, and using cannabis, which often led to erratic and violent behavior. It was reported that he frequently fired his service weapon into the air or within his home, creating fear among neighbors who felt powerless because of his status as a police officer.

Security footage captured the officer firing multiple shots in public areas, including the entrance and middle sections of Soi Khao Noi, where many people were present. This footage was used as evidence in the ongoing legal proceedings.

Pol. Lt. Gen. Yingyos Thepchamnong, acting commissioner of Region 2 Police, immediately ordered the dismissal of Pol. Sgt. Sunthorn from the police force. The officer is currently in custody at Bang Lamung Police Station and faces charges in accordance with the law.
