Drunk Aussie steals impounded Motorcycle

A drunken Australian man was arrested for allegedly stealing a motorcycle from a police impound lot in Samut Prakan, Thailand.

The Phra Khanong police were alerted on Friday night after a Honda CRF300L dual-sport motorcycle was stolen from the Samrong Nuea police station. Authorities tracked the bike to the Bang Chak BTS station in Bangkok’s Phra Khanong district, where the rider attempted to evade capture.

The suspect, 41-year-old Beau Gerard Hegarty, eventually abandoned the motorcycle and entered a Peugeot showroom in an attempt to flee on foot but was apprehended shortly afterward.

Hegarty, who was heavily intoxicated, registered an alcohol level of 85 micrograms per 100 milliliters of breath, exceeding the legal limit of 35 μg/100ml. He cooperated with police during the search and breathalyzer test.

The stolen motorcycle, valued at 150,000 baht, was traced back to an individual who had rented it to Hegarty. Authorities reported that Hegarty damaged the vehicle while stealing it from the police impound lot, allegedly to avoid paying related costs. Although no contraband was found in his possession, Hegarty failed to produce a valid driver’s license.

He faces initial charges of drink-driving, with additional charges potentially pending as the investigation continues.
