Army troops seized 7.8 million methamphetamines pills and some crystal meth in Chiang Rai province on Friday night but the drug mule managed to flee.
Troops manning a checkpoint on Doi Luang-Wiang Chiang Rung Road in Tambon Dong Mahawan, Chiang Rung district, spotted a pickup truck without a licence plate approaching at about 9.45pm.
The pickup defied signals to stop and sped through the checkpoint, prompting troops to go in pursuit. The pickup fell on the roadside about 350 metres into the chase but the driver managed to escape on foot into the dark.
Troops searched the pickup and found the meth pills in 39 bags as well as two bags of crystal meth. Third Army Area commander Lt Gen Wichak Siribansop told a press conference Saturday mornning that the crystal meth weighed about 50 kilograms.
