Czech tourist falls to death in Samui

Jiri Barta, a tourist from Czech Republic, travelled on a rented motorbike to Bang Khun Sri waterfall with eight other tourists, according to a Briton who was among the group.

Barta walked to the edge of the cliff and asked his friend to take photo of him. However, as he posed for photos, he lost his footing and plunged down below.

His friends climbed down to rescue him only to find out that he was breathless. They performed Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) without success as one of the tourists sought help from the locals.

Rescue workers later arrived at the scene and brought Barta’s body to Samui Hospital for autopsy.

According to the chief of Surat Thani Tourist Assistance Centre Samitsak Suthara, the Bang Khun Sri waterfall cliff has been declared off-limits to visitors because the area is accident-prone.

Local residents have cordoned off the edge of the cliff with rope and put up warning signs following frequent accidents at the spot. The recent case was a Russian who broke his leg after falling from the cliff, he added.
