Crocodile from Crocodile Dundee Dies Peacefully at Age 90

The beloved crocodile who starred in the hit film Crocodile Dundee has died, according to Crocosaurus Cove, the zoo where he lived since 2008. Burt passed away peacefully over the weekend and was estimated to be over 90 years old, surpassing the average life expectancy for his species.

“Burt was truly one of a kind,” the zoo remarked. “He wasn’t just a crocodile; he was a force of nature and a reminder of the power and majesty of these incredible creatures.”

The zoo described Burt as having a challenging yet memorable personality that endeared him to the caretakers and the thousands of visitors who came to see him over the years. His impressive size and commanding presence captivated audiences, especially during feeding times.

Burt was captured in the 1980s and made his on-screen debut in Crocodile Dundee, which premiered just before Christmas in 1986. In the film, he starred alongside Paul Hogan, contributing to shaping Australia’s image as a land of rugged beauty and remarkable wildlife.

Known for his “independent nature,” Burt was referred to as a “confirmed bachelor” with a “fiery temperament,” earning respect from both his caretakers and visitors.

“As we mourn his loss, we are reminded of the vital role wildlife plays in our shared history and the importance of preserving it for future generations,” the zoo added. The average lifespan of a saltwater crocodile is typically around 70 years.

In Burt’s memory, Crocosaurus Cove plans to install a commemorative sign celebrating his extraordinary life and the stories shared during his time at the park.
