Thailand Weather Update: Cool Temperatures Persist, Heavy Rain Forecast in the South

Thailand’s cool temperatures are expected to persist until the weekend, with heavy rain forecast in the South, according to the Thai Meteorological Department (TMD).

The cool spell continues to grip the North, Northeast, Central Plains, and Bangkok, though a slight weakening of the cold trough is anticipated on Tuesday and Wednesday. However, a new trough moving in between Thursday and Saturday will bring colder temperatures again, particularly to the highlands of the North and Northeast, where single-digit temperatures are being recorded.

In the South, widespread heavy rain is expected from Wednesday through Friday, likely affecting travel and agricultural activities in the region.

Pattaya residents and visitors have been feeling the chill as the city experiences cooler-than-usual temperatures combined with damp conditions. The current weather is part of a broader cold snap affecting much of Thailand.

The typically tropical coastal city has seen temperatures drop significantly, with occasional light rain adding to the dampness. While not as extreme as the single-digit temperatures recorded in the northern highlands, Pattaya’s cooler weather is unusual and has caught some residents and tourists off guard.

The cool weather is projected to taper off across the country from January 19 to 27, as a shift in wind direction brings warmer conditions.

On Monday, Sakon Nakhon’s agricultural weather station recorded one of the country’s lowest temperatures at 6.6°C. In Bangkok, the coolest spots were Bang Na district, at 15.2°C, and Suvarnabhumi Airport, at 15.9°C.

Phu Ruea National Park in Loei, renowned for its picturesque highlands, recorded temperatures as low as 0°C in elevated areas. The frosty conditions have attracted over 500 visitors, eager to experience the rare cold snap.

Authorities are advising residents in affected areas to prepare for colder weather and heavier rainfall, particularly in the South. Tourists visiting highland areas are urged to dress warmly and exercise caution.

The TMD continues to monitor weather patterns closely and will issue updates as needed.
