Chuck D Asks to Stop Using 'Burn Hollywood Burn' in Fire Videos

Chuck D of Public Enemy has called on people to refrain from using the group’s 1990 protest song “Burn Hollywood Burn” as a soundtrack for videos depicting the California wildfires, stating that the song has “nothing to do with families losing everything they have.”

The rapper made his plea over the weekend in response to numerous videos shared on TikTok and Instagram that featured the song alongside footage of the wildfires, which have claimed at least 24 lives, destroyed over 12,300 buildings, and displaced more than 200,000 people.

“Burn Hollywood Burn is a protest song,” Chuck D explained in a statement shared online. “Inspired by the Watts rebellion in 1965 against inequality, it was crafted to address the one-sided exploitation by the industry. It has nothing to do with families losing everything in a natural disaster. Please learn the history. Godspeed to those in loss.”

He continued, “Please don’t use our song on your reels and pictures of this horrifying natural disaster.”

Since last Tuesday, wildfires have continued to rage across Los Angeles County, incinerating thousands of homes and structures in areas such as Pacific Palisades, Eaton Canyon, Malibu, and the Hollywood Hills.

The two largest blazes, the Palisades and Eaton fires, remain less than 30% contained, with officials warning that increasing winds could further escalate the destruction. The fires have consumed approximately 62 square miles (160 square km), according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire).

All confirmed fatalities have been linked to the Palisades and Eaton fires, which were reported at only 11% and 27% containment, respectively, as of Sunday morning. The death toll is expected to rise.

Hollywood has been significantly affected, with many celebrities losing homes in Pacific Palisades and Malibu, including Billy Crystal, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Anthony Hopkins, Jeff Bridges, Mel Gibson, John Goodman, Paris Hilton, Cary Elwes, John C. Reilly, and Eugene Levy.

Actor James Woods shared that his home survived the Pacific Palisades fire, expressing relief on social media. He called it “a miracle,” stating that they were told the property was lost forever but found it still standing.

In response to the wildfires, Disney has pledged $15 million to fire relief organizations, including the American Red Cross and the Los Angeles Fire Department Foundation. Paramount, Fox, and Warner Bros. have each announced $1 million donations to various relief efforts.

Actress Jamie Lee Curtis, who also experienced property loss in Pacific Palisades, revealed that her family foundation would donate $1 million to create a fund to support the people of the region.
