China Warns It’s Ready for “Any Type of War” with US

China Warns It’s Ready for "Any Type of War" with US

China has issued a stern warning to the United States, stating it is prepared to engage in “any type” of war after President Donald Trump escalated trade tensions by imposing additional tariffs on Chinese goods. This announcement reflects the increasing likelihood of a trade war between the two largest economies.

In retaliation to Trump’s tariffs, which affect all Chinese imports, China has implemented 10-15% tariffs on US agricultural products. The country’s embassy expressed its readiness to confront the US, stating, “If war is what the US wants, be it a tariff war, a trade war, or any other type of war, we’re ready to fight till the end.”

This assertive rhetoric marks one of China’s strongest responses since Trump took office and coincides with the gathering of leaders at the annual National People’s Congress in Beijing. During this event, Premier Li Qiang announced a 7.2% increase in defense spending for the year, warning of “changes unseen in a century” occurring globally.

China aims to project confidence in its economic growth despite the looming threat of a trade war. The Chinese government has been keen to portray itself as a stable and peaceful nation in contrast to the US, which it accuses of involvement in conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine.

Beijing may be attempting to capitalize on tensions in US relations with allies like Canada and Mexico, mindful not to escalate rhetoric excessively as it seeks new global partnerships. The Premier’s address emphasized China’s commitment to openness and attracting foreign investment.

Historically, Chinese leaders have indicated military readiness, with President Xi previously urging troops to prepare for potential conflict during exercises near Taiwan. However, there is a distinction between maintaining military preparedness and a willingness to engage in war. The Chinese foreign ministry also dismissed US claims about fentanyl trafficking, arguing that they are merely a pretext for raising tariffs.

The US-China relationship remains one of the most contentious globally, and this latest proclamation could reinforce the views of China hawks within the Trump administration.

Initially, there had been optimism regarding US-China relations following Trump’s inauguration invitation to Xi. However, a proposed phone call between the two leaders last month did not materialize. Amidst economic challenges, including low consumption and a property crisis, China has vowed to invest billions to stimulate its economy, a plan revealed during the National People’s Congress.

Despite having the world’s second-largest military budget at $245 billion, China’s expenditure on defense is still significantly lower than that of the US. Analysts suggest that China may underreport its actual defense spending, complicating the security dynamics in the region.
