Cabinet Greenlights Phase 2 of Thai-Chinese High-Speed Rail Project, Linking Nakhon Ratchasima to Nong Khai

BANGKOK – In a significant move to bolster Thailand’s transportation infrastructure, the Cabinet has approved Phase 2 of the Thai-Chinese high-speed rail project, which will connect Nakhon Ratchasima to Nong Khai. The ambitious project spans 357.12 kilometers and comes with a budget of 341.35 billion baht.

This phase is a crucial extension of the high-speed rail network, following the completion of Phase 1, which links Bangkok to Nakhon Ratchasima. Once operational, the rail line will significantly reduce travel time between the two regions, enhance cross-border trade with Laos and China, and support Thailand’s broader economic development goals.

Bidding for the project is set to begin soon, with construction expected to commence by 2025. The rail services are anticipated to launch in 2031, marking a new era of connectivity and efficiency for Thailand’s northeastern region.

The high-speed rail project is a key component of Thailand’s strategic partnership with China under the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). It aims to strengthen regional connectivity, facilitate trade, and promote tourism by providing a faster and more sustainable mode of transportation.

Government officials have emphasized the project’s potential to stimulate economic growth in the northeastern provinces, creating jobs and improving access to markets. The rail line will also serve as a vital link in the broader ASEAN rail network, enhancing Thailand’s role as a regional transportation hub.

As the project moves forward, authorities are committed to ensuring transparency and efficiency in the bidding and construction processes. The Thai-Chinese high-speed rail project represents a landmark step in modernizing Thailand’s infrastructure and fostering closer ties with its regional partners.
