Buriram Infant Found with Drugs from Breastfeeding Mother

Buriram Infant Found with Drugs from Breastfeeding Mother

Authorities in Buriram’s Nang Rong district have uncovered a tragic case involving a three-month-old infant with drugs in his system, likely due to breastfeeding from a mother using illicit substances and vaping. Police have taken urgent steps to protect the child by prohibiting the mother from nursing until she ceases all drug use.

Local officials, police, and village leaders launched an investigation after receiving complaints about a couple allegedly using methamphetamine, cannabis, and vaping in their home, despite the mother breastfeeding. Urine tests confirmed drug use in both parents, who admitted to consuming methamphetamine and cannabis. A search of their residence uncovered drug paraphernalia and cannabis. As a result, the couple and their infant were taken to Nang Rong Hospital for medical evaluation and further intervention.

Government agencies, including the Buriram Provincial Social Development and Human Security Office, convened to address the infant’s well-being. Hospital tests confirmed the presence of drugs in the baby, most likely transmitted through breast milk. In response, officials immediately barred the mother from breastfeeding to prevent further harm to the child.

Authorities are now working on a rehabilitation plan for both parents, aiming to help them overcome drug addiction and secure employment to support their family. Jakkrit Ruamkool, an official from the Damrongtham Centre, emphasized the importance of coordinated efforts to ensure the child’s welfare. Support measures include providing formula milk, baby essentials, and continuous monitoring of the mother’s health while the father undergoes rehabilitation and job placement. Police remain committed to overseeing the case and providing necessary assistance.

Newborn Found Abandoned in Buriram Banana Grove

In a separate incident in Buriram, a newborn baby boy was discovered abandoned in a banana grove on February 2. A 75-year-old woman, while collecting banana leaves, found the infant covered in ant bites.

The baby, believed to be only a few hours old, was quickly transported to Ban Dan Hospital, where doctors confirmed he was in stable condition, weighing 2.84 kilograms at birth.

Police Colonel Siriwat Somkitsiri launched an investigation and soon identified the parents—a 16-year-old girl and a 17-year-old boy—who admitted to abandoning the baby out of fear of informing their families.

Both cases highlight ongoing social challenges in Buriram, prompting authorities to strengthen child protection measures and parental support programs.
