A man reportedly traveled to Thailand with his girlfriend over the holiday season, where he consumed a hallucinogenic substance, leading to his untimely death, according to local media.
It is claimed that the man purchased the drug from a shop in Chiang Mai, a city nestled in the mountainous region of northern Thailand.
After returning to their hotel room with the mushrooms, he allegedly experienced a sudden and severe reaction shortly after consuming them, resulting in his death.
Emergency services were called to the resort where the couple was staying. The man’s girlfriend reportedly informed authorities that the mushrooms had been purchased over the counter at a local cannabis store.
On Tuesday, police raided the shop and reportedly arrested the owner on suspicion of selling category 5 narcotics. Local reports indicate that officers discovered approximately 7 kilograms of magic mushrooms stored on the premises.
Royal Thai Police Major General Worapong Khamluea, Commander of the Investigation Division, stated, “The tourist had been taking pictures at Tha Pae Gate, a well-known landmark, with his girlfriend before visiting a shop to buy magic mushrooms. He consumed them at the hotel, but 40 minutes later, he collapsed and began foaming at the mouth due to a reaction to the substance.”
