When two teams, who’ve been poor most of the season, meet the outcome could be a cagey 0-0 tactical battle or one team makes an early breakthrough and parks the bus. At the Amex Stadium, something different happened!

Brighton Had To Win!

Brighton had to win this game! As teams around them have been moving away to safety, and some moving closer to them, they had to get over the disappointment of their FA Cup semi-final defeat and move on. They had to win and they knew Bournemouth, who’d lost 11 of their last 12 Premier League games on the road, were there for the taking.

For Bournemouth that one win came at Huddersfield and they also have a problem scoring goals with only seven in the last nine games. One positive for Bournemouth was that the Amex Stadium no longer represented a fortress with Brighton losing three of their last five home matches.

Anthony Knockaert Makes Headlines!

For his goal against Crystal Palace in March Anthony Knockaert won the Premier League goal of the month. That only made two for the season for Knockaert and Chris Houghton would no doubt be looking for more headline goals from his attacking midfielder against Bournemouth. But Knockaert made headlines for a different reason!

Pattaya One: Anthony Knockaert. March goal of the month winner.

On 68 minutes, with Brighton losing 2-0 and not having registered a shot on target, a Brighton attack broke down and Bournemouth’s Adam Smith found himself in no danger and with time and space to clear from the left back position. Out of nowhere Knockaert launched himself at Smith and took him out shin high. He had to go. And he did. It was dangerous, totally uncalled for, and Knockaert had clearly completely lost the plot.  Houghton ignored him as he made his way to the dressing room.

Pattaya One: Anthony Knockaert heads for his early bath after seeing red.

Bournemouth Smash And Grab – Five Times!

33 Minutes: Dan Gosling scored his first goal for a year as Bournemouth passed the ball through Brighton’s defence. Callum Wilson played the vital ball and Gosling tucked it away from six yards.

Pattaya One: Dan Gosling starts the rout.

55 Minutes: Ryan Fraser smashed this one away nicely from the edge of the box after a through pass from Wilson. In the build up Knockaert had given the ball away for Brighton.

Pattaya One: Ryan Fraser. One goal and two more assists.

74 Minutes: David Brooks finished off a very similar move to goal number one which climaxed with him playing a one-two with Fraser.

Pattaya One: David Brooks celebrates his goal.

82 Minutes: Callum Wilson found himself with loads of time and space in Brighton’s box after being found by Fraser. Wilson turned and fired in with his left foot.

90+ 2 Minutes: Junior Stanislas completed another walk-in after being found by Brooks.

Brighton Appalling x 2

Brighton were worse than appalling and if Cardiff, had beaten Burnley, they would have been favourites for the third drop slot.

On Tuesday Brighton entertain Cardiff who are at least putting up a fight for their survival. If they can come away with a win Brighton could well be doomed!

Chris Hughton Comments:

“We started OK but a lack of confidence and quality in the final third is stopping us getting ahead in games. Then from our possession, they scored – that was the story of the game. Four of the goals they scored were from our possession. We wasn’t able to handle their pace on the counter attack.”

Eddie Howe Comments:

“It has been a difficult run for us recently, so we knew the importance of this game, we were desperate to win. It has been a frustrating second half of the season. We started so well that we felt we could really go on and achieve special things and it hasn’t really materialised.

The Big Stats

  • Brighton – No shots on target and now goals.
  • Bournemouth – Five shots on target and five goals.
