Bid to rescue tourist left DANGLING on CLIFF-FACE

CLIFF-FACE

An Austrian base jumper was blown onto a sheer cliff face and left dangling from his snagged parachute in Thailand on Monday.

Media reported that the jumper, identified as Johannes Klauser, 28, and his wife went to the top of the 250-metre-high Khao Ok Thalu mountain in Muang district’s tambon Khuha Sawan in the morning.

Once airborne, winds blew him onto the cliff face, where his parachute snagged on a rock — leaving him dangling about 175 metres above the ground.

The spectacle of the man teetering on a ledge — dramatic drone footage showed him enveloped in the billowing parachute — drew many local residents while local police and rescue workers tried to rescue him.

In the evening, rock climber Santhiti Rompothong managed to climb down the near-vertical cliff and free the jumper.

Mr Klauser and several friends performed jumps in the southern province to mark National Children’s Day on Saturday.

He and his wife prolonged their stay after their friends left.

It was reported that the Austrian had previously twice performed the jump from the Khao Ok Thalu mountaintop without incident.
