Beatles and Rolling Stones Claim Early Grammy Awards

The Beatles and the Rolling Stones have both secured Grammy Awards as the ceremony begins in Los Angeles. The Fab Four took home the award for Best Rock Performance for “Now And Then,” their “final” song created from a demo by the late John Lennon. Meanwhile, the Rolling Stones captured the award for Best Rock Album for their 2023 release, Hackney Diamonds.

These accolades were given during the Grammys’ “premiere ceremony,” which precedes the main event at 5 PM local time (1 AM London time).

Among other early winners, Sabrina Carpenter earned Best Pop Solo Performance for her summer hit “Espresso,” while British singer Charli XCX won three awards, including Best Dance/Pop Album for Brat. The ceremony kicked off with a star-studded performance of Simon & Garfunkel’s “Bridge Over Troubled Water,” dedicated to the victims of the recent Los Angeles wildfires.

Performers Yolanda Adams and Angelique Kidjo delivered a powerful gospel-infused rendition of the classic, honoring first responders who bravely tackled the wildfires.

Grammys CEO Harvey Mason Jr addressed attendees at the Crypto.com arena, highlighting the awards’ purpose to “honor music’s great power to inspire, to heal, and to unite.” He also acknowledged the resilience of the Los Angeles community following the recent tragedies.

Beyoncé leads this year’s nominations with her country-adjacent album Cowboy Carter, nominated for 11 awards. She has already won Best Country Performance by a Duo or Group for her collaboration with Miley Cyrus on “II Most Wanted.” However, she lost Best Country Song to Kacey Musgraves, whose track “The Architect” reflects on the existence of God after a school shooting. Musgraves remarked, “There’s so much darkness in the world right now, and it just feels so good to be able to fight some of that darkness through song.” She previously won Album of the Year in 2019 for Golden Hour.

This year’s nominees for Album of the Year include Billie Eilish, Beyoncé (who has yet to win this category despite four nominations), Taylor Swift, Chappell Roan, and rapper André 3000, nominated for his spiritual jazz flute album New Blue Sun. Charli XCX and Sabrina Carpenter are also contenders, and fans speculate that their early wins could enhance their chances for the night’s biggest prize.

Neither Charli nor Sabrina was present to accept their early awards, as they are scheduled to perform later in the evening. Charli’s producer, Finn Keane, accepted the award for Best Dance/Pop Single for “Von Dutch” on her behalf, praising her as an “amazing collaborator.”

The Beatles’ award was accepted by John Lennon’s son, Sean Ono Lennon, who called them “the greatest band of all time.” He urged listeners to share their music with younger generations, emphasizing the need for peace, love, and the magic of the 1960s to endure.

In other wins, Kendrick Lamar secured three consecutive awards: Best Rap Song, Best Rap Performance, and Best Music Video for “Not Like Us,” a powerful critique of fellow artist Drake. His producer, Mustard, celebrated Lamar’s exceptional performance on the track.
