Barcelona Stuns Real Madrid 5-2 to Win Spanish Super Cup

Barcelona overcame an early setback to defeat Real Madrid 5-2 in a thrilling Spanish Super Cup final on Sunday, securing their record-extending 15th title. The match showcased four goals from Barcelona in a dominant first half, even as they played the latter stages with ten men after their goalkeeper was sent off.

The exciting Kylian Mbappé initially put Madrid ahead, but Barcelona quickly bounced back to assert their dominance, marking a successful start to the Hansi Flick era.

After Mbappé’s opening goal, Lamine Yamal leveled the score before Robert Lewandowski converted a penalty to give Barcelona the lead. Raphinha shone with a brace, and Alejandro Balde also found the net.

Rodrygo Goes managed to score a consolation goal for Madrid with a free-kick, but they were unable to exploit their numerical advantage following the dismissal of Barcelona’s Wojciech Szczesny in the second half.

Both Flick and Madrid’s Carlo Ancelotti maintained the same line-ups from their semi-final matches. Barcelona threatened early when Yamal forced an impressive save from Thibaut Courtois with a curling effort before Madrid struck first in the fifth minute.

Mbappé’s brilliant counter-attack goal came after he seized the ball near the halfway line, darted into the area, and tucked it past Szczesny, much to the delight of Madrid fans.

However, Barcelona responded with a stunning individual goal from 17-year-old Yamal, who emulated former great Lionel Messi by cutting in from the right and finishing low inside the near post.

Inigo Martinez later hobbled off with an injury, prompting Flick to substitute Ronald Araujo amidst ongoing transfer speculation surrounding the defender.

Barcelona continued pressing forward, and Lewandowski scored from the penalty spot after Eduardo Camavinga fouled Gavi. Raphinha added the third with a header from a deep cross by Jules Kounde, and just before half-time, Balde scored the fourth after a slick counter-attack involving Yamal and Raphinha.

After the break, the Catalans maintained their momentum, with Raphinha scoring the fifth after a deft dribble and finish following a pass from Marc Casado.

Things took a turn when Szczesny received a red card for bringing down Mbappé outside the area. Rodrygo, who had earlier struck the post, converted the resulting free-kick against Szczesny’s replacement, Inaki Pena.

Momentarily, it looked like Madrid might rally. Mbappé set up Jude Bellingham, but a fantastic challenge from Kounde denied him. The French forward also came close to netting again, but Pena made a crucial save.

Barcelona introduced Dani Olmo for his debut appearance since joining the club on a temporary basis, a move that sparked discussions earlier in the week during the semi-finals.

Ultimately, Barcelona’s stellar performance not only showcased their attacking prowess but also secured them the Spanish Super Cup title for the 15th time, solidifying their dominance in Spanish football.
