Bangkok, January 7, 2025 — The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) is gearing up for a historic day on January 23, when Thailand’s marriage equality law officially takes effect. The landmark legislation, endorsed by His Majesty the King and published in the Royal Gazette last year, makes Thailand the third country in Asia to recognize same-sex marriage.
Deputy Bangkok Governor Sanon Wangsrangboon revealed that around 300 same-sex couples are expected to tie the knot in Bangkok on the first day of the law’s implementation. To ensure the occasion runs smoothly, district officials have undergone training to assist couples with marriage registration procedures.
Couples are encouraged to fill out online forms to streamline the process. So far, at least 100 couples have pre-registered, with 67 opting to formalize their unions at the Siam Paragon shopping complex, while the rest will do so at various district offices.
Bang Rak district, affectionately known as “Love Hamlet,” is expected to attract a significant number of couples. District chief Pornpan Watthanasin announced special celebrations at Bang Rak and Pathumwan offices, including unique activities to mark the momentous occasion.
Members of the People’s Party, including MPs Thanyawat Kamolwongwat and Paramet Witthayaraksan, recently inspected Bang Rak’s preparations and expressed enthusiasm for the event. “This is a historic step forward for equality and the recognition of gender diversity,” said Mr. Thanyawat.
The new law introduces key changes, including replacing “husband” and “wife” with the gender-neutral term “spouse” in official documents. It also extends legal recognition to marriages between Thais and foreign nationals, though coverage will only apply in Thailand if the foreigner’s home country does not recognize same-sex marriage.
The Department of Provincial Administration will launch a nationwide campaign on January 14 to raise awareness about same-sex marriage registration, further underscoring Thailand’s commitment to equality.
