Bangkok, Phuket and of course our very own Pattaya preferred film locations for international film makers

Thailand’s Department of Tourism has introduced a new cash rebate program designed to attract international filmmakers to the country. Under this program, filmmakers can receive a rebate of up to 20% on expenditures exceeding 150 million baht.

Starting this month, the rebate program offers a base rebate of 15% for investments of 50 million baht or more. In addition to this, there are several additional incentives available. Films that promote Thai tourism and culture can receive an extra 5% bonus, while employing Thai key personnel can earn a 3% rebate. Filming in emerging cities can provide a 3% rebate, and utilizing local post-production services can generate a 2% rebate. Furthermore, films with budgets exceeding 150 million baht are eligible for an additional 5% rebate. However, the maximum rebate per film is capped at 150 million baht.

The cash rebate program comes in the wake of a successful year for Thailand’s film industry. In 2023, the country saw a total of 466 international productions from 40 different countries, generating over 6.6 billion baht in revenue. This marked a substantial increase of nearly 2 billion baht compared to the previous year. The productions included a wide range of content, such as commercials, documentaries, TV shows, movies, music videos, reality shows, series, and dramas.

Among the contributing countries, the United States, Hong Kong, China, Germany, and South Korea were the leading sources of international productions. Filming locations varied, with Bangkok and 57 other provinces being popular choices. The most frequently chosen destinations included Bangkok, Chonburi (Pattaya), Samut Prakan, Pathum Thani, and Phuket.
