Four family members, including three Americans, were shot in Durango, Mexico, during an attack that resulted in the deaths of three relatives, according to officials.
The victims included two U.S. citizens, Vicente Peña Rodríguez and Antonio Fernández Rodríguez, as well as their relative, local resident Jorge Eduardo Vargas Aguirre, all of whom were killed. Vicente Peña Rodríguez’s teenage son was the sole survivor of the attack but remains in critical condition.
The incident occurred on Friday night while the family was traveling in a GMC Yukon with an Illinois license plate. The vehicle was later discovered abandoned along the Francisco Zarco highway.
Authorities are investigating the possibility of robbery as a potential motive behind the attack. Vicente Peña Rodríguez, who resided in Chicago, was reportedly in Mexico for a vacation with his son at the time of the incident, according to Chicago’s ABC station WLS.
