Army Withholds Name of Soldier Killed in DC Plane Crash

As of Friday afternoon, authorities have pulled 41 bodies from the Potomac River, including 28 that have been positively identified. Among the casualties from the Washington, DC plane crash, the name of one of the three soldiers killed remains undisclosed at the family’s request.

The Army confirmed the identities of two soldiers: Staff Sergeant Ryan Austin O’Hara and Chief Warrant Officer 2 Andrew Loyd Eaves. However, they have chosen not to release the name of the third soldier due to the family’s wishes.

In a development related to the investigation, the black box from the military’s Black Hawk helicopter has been recovered. Investigators are now analyzing the flight data recorder and two others from the American Airlines jet involved in the mid-air collision, which occurred as the plane was landing at a nearby airport.

Washington DC Fire Chief John Donnelly Sr. stated that next of kin notifications had been made for 18 families and anticipates that all 67 bodies will eventually be recovered. “It’s been a tough response for a lot of our people,” he added, highlighting that over 300 responders have been involved in the recovery efforts.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has confirmed the recovery of both the cockpit voice recorder and flight data recorder from the American Airlines flight. Investigators are assessing various factors that may have contributed to the crash, which NTSB chairwoman Jennifer Homendy described as an “all-hands-on-deck event.” The actions of the military pilot and air traffic control are under scrutiny, particularly as it appears the helicopter flew into the jet’s flight path.

Air crash investigations typically take between 12 to 18 months, and officials have stated that they will not speculate on the cause of the incident at this time. There are indications that the helicopter may have exceeded its altitude limits. Former President Trump commented on the situation, suggesting the helicopter was “flying too high” at the time of the crash, and criticized the pilot’s actions while attributing some air safety issues to diversity initiatives.

Additional information has also emerged about the victims, including flight attendant Danasia Elder from the American Airlines flight, as reported by WSOC-TV in Charlotte, North Carolina.
