Authorities in Mae Hong Son successfully rescued an American tourist who went missing during a hiking trip near Pai District. Pol. Lt. Col. Suwit Boonyapen, a tourist police inspector, reported that the tourist, identified as 68-year-old Daniel James Murphy, became lost in the dense forest while exploring the area.

The incident began early in the day when local authorities were alerted to the situation at approximately 9:00 AM. Mr. Murphy, who had set out on a solo hiking expedition, lost his way in the unfamiliar terrain. Recognizing the urgency of the situation, the Pai Rescue Unit quickly mobilized a search operation. Local villagers from Yapho village also joined the effort, demonstrating a strong sense of community in assisting the stranded tourist.

The search teams faced challenging conditions as they navigated the thick forest and rugged landscape to locate Mr. Murphy. After several hours of combing the area, the team successfully found him at 12:21 PM. Rescuers reported that he was in good physical condition despite his ordeal .

Mr. Murphy was safely escorted to a secure location, where he expressed immense gratitude for the coordinated efforts of the rescue teams and the local villagers. “I am truly thankful for the quick response and the kindness of everyone involved,” he said, visibly relieved after the ordeal.

Pol. Lt. Col. Suwit praised the rescue operation but also used the incident to issue a warning to tourists. He urged visitors to prioritize safety when exploring natural areas and strongly recommended hiking with experienced guides to avoid similar situations. “The Pai area is beautiful but can be unpredictable. These incidents are not uncommon, and it’s crucial to be well-prepared,” he stated.

Local authorities and tour operators have been reminded to emphasize safety guidelines and provide tourists with resources and information to ensure safe hiking experiences. Despite the incident, Mae Hong Son remains a popular destination for nature enthusiasts drawn to its scenic landscapes and tranquil atmosphere.
