Rangers at the Sri Song Rak Camp in Loei province recently thwarted a major drug smuggling operation, seizing 200 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine (Ice).
The operation began following a tip-off two days prior about drug trafficking from Laos into Ban Huai Pao, Pak Chom. A rapid-response team was deployed to patrol the area. During their surveillance, rangers spotted two pickup trucks with suspiciously modified compartments, prompting further investigation. Officers set up a checkpoint and successfully stopped the vehicles, leading to the detention of the occupants. A thorough search revealed six large sacks filled with Ice, totaling 200 kilograms. The four individuals in the vehicles, exhibiting suspicious behavior, were arrested. The authorities have not released the names of the suspects at this time.
The drugs and vehicles were confiscated and transferred to Pak Chom Police Station as part of an ongoing investigation aimed at dismantling the smuggling network. Law enforcement officials are focused on tracing the origin and destination of the narcotics.
“We are dedicated to combating drug smuggling in the region, and this operation marks a significant step in addressing the illegal drug trade,” said a law enforcement spokesperson.
Since October, anti-drug operations along Loei’s border areas have led to 666 arrests and the seizure of large quantities of narcotics, including more than 56 million methamphetamine pills.
This interception underscores the continuing challenges law enforcement faces in border regions. Ongoing vigilance and collaboration between local and regional authorities are essential in the fight against drug trafficking.
