Govt raises elderly allowance

On Friday, the cabinet approved an increase in the monthly allowances for senior citizens, as well as adjustments to the allowances for children and individuals with disabilities.

According to government spokesman Jirayu Huangsap, the elderly allowance will now be raised based on age brackets. The new allowances for senior citizens are as follows:

  • Aged 60-69: from 600 to 700 baht
  • Aged 70-79: from 700 to 850 baht
  • Aged 80-89: from 800 to 1,000 baht
  • Aged 90 and above: from 1,000 to 1,250 baht

The allowance for children under six years old will be set at 600 baht per month. Previously, this allowance was available only to families with an annual income of up to 100,000 baht and began when a baby was born. Under the new system, the support will start when a woman is four months pregnant.

Additionally, the allowance for the disabled will be standardized at 1,000 baht, replacing the previous range of 800 to 1,000 baht.

These changes were proposed by the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security during the mobile cabinet meeting held in Chiang Mai province. The exact date for the implementation of these changes is yet to be confirmed.

Earlier this month, Deputy Finance Minister Paopoom Rojanasakul stated that the Ministry of Finance is preparing to propose a one-time cash payment of 10,000 baht for the elderly.
