Investigation into police escorting luxury car convoy

The chief of the Central Investigation Bureau, Pol Lt Gen Jirabhop Bhuridej, has ordered an inquiry into allegations that highway police cleared traffic to allow a convoy of luxury cars to pass along the M6 motorway, disrupting regular traffic. The incident occurred on Saturday, with the convoy traveling from Ayutthaya to Nakhon Ratchasima.

Motorists had complained that police officers on motorcycles blocked normal traffic to facilitate the billion-baht convoy of luxury vehicles. The cars were reportedly headed to Nakhon Ratchasima to be featured in a vegetarian and cultural event. According to a source, the highway police provided an escort without seeking approval from their superiors.

On Saturday evening, 45 luxury cars, valued at approximately 1.5 billion baht, were showcased at the vegetarian fair held at the Thao Suranari Monument in Nakhon Ratchasima’s Muang district. The event, which began on Friday, concluded on Sunday night.

Pol Maj Kla Sombatpiboon, chief of Highway Police Station 1 in Nakhon Pathom, revealed that two officers, a sub-lieutenant and a sergeant major, had admitted to their involvement and have since been suspended pending an internal investigation. Pol Maj Kla expressed his frustration, noting that the two officers had been moonlighting in Nakhon Ratchasima while their fellow officers were dealing with traffic issues on a partially flooded Rama 2 Road.

Photos of the police leading the convoy were shared on the popular Facebook page “Yak Dang Chat Hai Return Part 6,” sparking outrage among users. Many blamed the convoy for the traffic congestion on the M6 motorway, further fueling the controversy surrounding the officers’ actions.
