Newcastle United came from behind to defeat Wolverhampton Wanderers 2-1 at Molineux, thanks to second-half goals from Fabian Schar and Harvey Barnes.
The home side initially took the lead through Mario Lemina, who scored after a well-executed counter-attack initiated by Joao Gomes. Jorgen Strand Larsen provided the assist, allowing Lemina to sweep the ball into the net, leaving Newcastle in shock.
Despite their slow start, Newcastle made three changes at halftime. However, it was Wolves who continued to apply pressure with Larsen hitting the post and forcing a low save from Nick Pope. But the tide turned when Newcastle struck twice from long range. Schar’s equalizer came through a deflected shot, while Barnes scored the winner with a stunning effort, clinching all three points for the visitors and leaving Wolves still searching for their first win this season.
Barnes and Newcastle Find a Way to Win
Newcastle manager Eddie Howe highlighted the importance of the victory, stating, “It was a massive win for us. We had questions to answer away from home, and this shows our progression.”
Reacting to his team’s performance, Barnes commented, “We haven’t hit the heights of last season yet, but we are finding ways to win, and that’s what matters.”
Manager Reactions
Wolves manager Gary O’Neil expressed frustration after the match, saying, “Frustration is the right word. We gave it everything and showed quality, but we were punished for our mistakes.” He acknowledged that they had a tough run ahead and emphasized the need for improvement.
O’Neil noted, “At 1-0, I felt we were the more likely to score, but we started to tire and were punished for small errors. We must remain positive and seize our opportunities.”
Looking Ahead
This loss marks a challenging start for Wolves, who remain without a win in their first four Premier League games, while Newcastle climbs to third place in the league. The upcoming fixtures for Wolves, including matches against Manchester City and Liverpool, present a daunting prospect as they aim to turn their season around.
