Gareth Southgate stepped down as England manager on Tuesday, following England’s defeat to Spain in the Euro 2024 final.
Despite leading England to two Euro finals and a World Cup semi-final during his tenure, Southgate announced his resignation, stating, “As a proud Englishman, it has been the honor of my life to play for England and to manage England. It has meant everything to me, and I have given it my all. But it’s time for change, and for a new chapter. Sunday’s final in Berlin against Spain was my final game as England manager.”
Since his departure, high-profile names like Thomas Tuchel, Jurgen Klopp, Mauricio Pochettino, Graham Potter, Eddie Howe, and Frank Lampard have been rumored as potential successors. However, a surprising candidate has emerged.
According to The Telegraph, Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou is now among the contenders being considered by the English Football Association (FA) to replace Southgate. The report states, “The Tottenham Hotspur head coach has been tracked by the Football Association for years. FA technical director John McDermott has followed Postecoglou’s career closely from Australia to Japan to Scotland and now into the Premier League and is an admirer of his work.”
Postecoglou is said to meet the criteria set by the FA, which is determined to explore a wide range of candidates to find the right fit for the England manager position. Additionally, Lee Carsley, the current manager of England’s U21 team, has also been linked to the role.
