The government has postponed the endorsement of a proposed legislation prohibiting the recreational use of cannabis, according to Public Health Minister Cholnan Srikaew, who made the announcement following the cabinet meeting on Tuesday.
Mr. Cholnan explained that the Ministry of Public Health was unable to present the bill to the cabinet on Tuesday because additional time is needed to gather opinions.
During the May 2023 election campaign, Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin committed to restricting cannabis solely for medical and health-related purposes, expressing concerns regarding addiction. Previously, in mid-2022, the prior administration enacted groundbreaking legislation that positioned Thailand as the first nation in Asia to decriminalize cannabis, leading to the opening of numerous marijuana and weed-related establishments.
In a statement last week, Mr. Cholnan mentioned that the revised cannabis and hemp control bill retains the fundamental principle that the drug is intended solely for medical treatment. However, it also explicitly emphasizes that any recreational use will not be permitted.
