The Thai Appeals Court denied human rights lawyer Arnon Nampa’s bail request on the grounds that his lèse majesté conviction carries a lengthy prison term and that he might try to abscond from prison if bail were granted.
Arnon was sentenced to four years in jail without suspension by the Criminal Court on Tuesday for committing the act of lèse majesté during a protest against the government on October 14th, 2020. A 20,000 baht fine was added to his punishment.
Arnon’s lawyer, Krisadang Nutcharat, said today that he will discuss a possible new bail application with his client.
The human rights lawyer and head of the Ratsadon protest organization had stopped all political activity some days before Tuesday’s verdict reading.
