9 suspects identified by Thai teen victim of gang rape

Out of a total of 11 suspects brought in by police, a total of 9 have been identified by the Thai teen victim allegedly gang raped by the men.

A teenage girl allegedly gang-raped in Phang Nga province yesterday (Sept 21) identified all nine men brought by the police for identification at the police station.

The identification by the girl was held at Kok Kloi police station in Takua Thung district.

So far 11 were arrested but nine were escorted to the station for identification by the girl. Two others are still in prison.

All the nine men were mingled by 30 other people selected for identification by the girl.

In the two rounds of identification, she correctly identified nine of them.

After the identification, all the nine suspects however refused to sign acknowledgement of the identification process with reason that the girl was guided to identify them.

Their lawyer said outsiders did not dress the same as the suspects and they were called in by names to the room for identification.

However the police didn’t call the names of the suspects, he said, adding that such practice was tantamount to guide the victim to identify them.

But Phang Nga police commander Pol Maj Gen Boontawi Toraksa assured that the identification process was transparent and followed justice procedures.

He said outsiders who were mingled with the suspects were also selected to have same ages and statures as them.
