2 deaths as tropical storm causes mayhem for Thailand

A tropical storm that has been causing mayhem in parts of Thailand since Friday has claimed the lives of at least 2 people so far.

At least two deaths have been blamed on a tropical storm that has flooded several provinces in the north, northeast and central regions since Friday.

Doksuri moved into Nan province from Laos over the weekend after devastating the central coast of Vietnam last week, where it was blamed for at least nine deaths and widespread damage.

Wimon Suriya, 59, drowned in front of her home after falling into the floodwaters at midnight on Monday in Kabin Buri district, Prachinburi province. Her son, Wathit Srijarat, 49, found her floating face down after he came back from work. Watchirawit Sikaew, 23, died early Saturday morning in Phitsanulok province after a tree fell on the motorcycle he was riding.

Altogether the storm has caused flooding in 10 Isaan provinces including Loei, Udon Thani, Khon Kaen, Nakhon Ratchasima, Buriram and Ubon Ratchathani. Five central provinces and eight in the north – including Chiang Mai, Lamphun and Sukhothai – have also seen flooding.

Thirty-six provinces nationwide will see up to a 60 percent chance of rain through tomorrow, meteorologists said Monday.
