16,000 litres of diesel leaks in Prachin Buri

An oil tanker carrying 16,000 litres of diesel crashed into a lamppost on a Prachin Buri road before it overturned, causing a leakage on Friday.

Police said the accident happened at 11:30am on the Kabin Buri-Nakhon Ratchasima road near a Muang Kao school in Tambon Muang Kao of Prachin Buri’s Kabin Buri district.

The tanker flipped over after it fell into the middle of the road, causing the oil to gush out. The Tambon Muang Kao had to dispatch a fire engine to be on standby for fear that the leaked oil would catch fire. Diesel is non-flammable.

Residents and passers-by used small containers to trap gushing oil and take home.

The oil tanker driver, Chalongchai Wichitthirakul, said he was transporting the oil from Rayong to a client in Nakhon Ratchasima’s Phimai district when the accident occurred.

He claimed that a pickup truck changed lane to cut into his front, prompting him to swerve to the right and hit the lamppost.

The oil company said it would send a team to clean the leak.
