12 Speeding Drivers Jailed After Pattaya Motorway Pile-Up
Twelve reckless drivers have been sentenced to two months in prison after causing a high-speed accident on the Pattaya Motorway that damaged all their vehicles and an innocent motorist’s car.
On Friday, the Chon Buri District Court sentenced the drivers to two months in Chon Buri Prison, revoked their driving licenses, and confiscated their modified vehicles. The defendants admitted to multiple offenses, including reckless driving and exceeding speed limits, before being indicted.
The accident occurred at 2:20 AM on Sunday along the Bangkok-bound motorway in Si Racha district, Chon Buri province. Witnesses were alarmed as the 12 drivers engaged in a dangerous race, weaving between lanes at speeds between 130 and 180 km/h.
The high-speed competition ended in disaster when one car lost control and collided with a passing vehicle, triggering a chain reaction that damaged all 12 racers’ cars. Highway police reported that four people sustained injuries, and the crash brought traffic to a standstill until all damaged vehicles were removed.
CCTV footage confirmed that the drivers had raced for at least 10 kilometers before the accident. Their reckless maneuvers put other motorists at serious risk.
Under Thai law, the district court can impose a maximum sentence of three months or a fine of up to 60,000 baht for such offenses. More severe cases are handled by provincial courts.
