Yingluck loses bail, Thai passport and assets by disappearing

Yingluck loses bail, Thai passport and assets by disappearing

Yingluck Shinawatra’s mysterious escape ahead of her court date on Friday will have far-reaching consequences for the former prime minister.

Even though the Supreme Court rescheduled the court date for Sept. 27, it won’t be as simple as her returning for that date.

The Finance Ministry was already planning to freeze her assets and will still to move ahead with that no matter where the former PM is. They have an administrative order for that action in place, reported Thai PBS.

Yingluck was supposed to  pay compensation of about THB36 billion, roughly 20 percent of the losses incurred by Thai citizens over her rice-pledging scheme. She was freed on a THB30 million bail bond, which has already been seized to be put toward paying off her debt.

Bangkok Post reported that current PM Prayuth Chan-ocha plans to revoke Yingluck’s Thai passport over her escape and a warrant has been issued for her arrest.

“It is normal procedure. Legal aspects will be examined to determine what can be done,” Prayuth said on Friday.

They are already investigating how she managed to leave since there is no record of her passport being scanned and at any land or air ports.

He has denied that officials let her leave the country to evade what was likely to be a 10-year jail sentence.

Her brother, another former PM, Thaksin Shinawatra, also fled Thailand in 2006 to avoid a two year jail term prison for corruption. His Thai passport was revoked.

It is unknown where Yingluck fled to.
